Curriculum Overview

At Oakmere School we believe in the value of lifelong learning and that people learn new things every day. Learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone.  Our teaching aims to equip children with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to make informed choices about the important things in their lives and to take responsibility for their own learning.  We believe that appropriate learning will lead to happy and rewarding lives.

Every aspect of our curriculum is underpinned by the  Oakmere core values of:

  • Friendship
  • Respect
  • Opportunity
  • Self-Discipline

And the five British values of:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of those with different faiths and belief

We have worked hard to create an Oakmere Curriculum which follows the National Curriculum at the same time as providing the learning, opportunities and experiences that are particularly pertinent and important to our children. For this reason, PSHE is considered a core curriculum area alongside English, Maths and Science, and oracy is promoted so there is a strong foundation of speaking, listening and vocabulary on which to build at secondary school later on, as well as supporting children’s understanding of standard English and grammar.

Core curriculum areas are supported by our approach to the Foundation Subjects. Each sequence of learning starts with a stimulating engagement activity that has a real purpose and inspires observation and questioning. They end with an event to evaluate our learning and share our progress with others.

The Intent of the Oakmere Curriculum

Knowledge Skills Wellbeing
To impart knowledge that drives engagement, nurtures curiosity and builds meaningful connections both in school and the wider world. For pupils to master the basic skills of literacy, numeracy and oracy in order to be successful, independent and motivated learners in readiness for the next step in their education and their lives beyond. To develop every child’s confidence, resilience, happiness and well-being by putting PSHE at the heart of everything we do in order to instil what is necessary for a successful future.
